Its primary purpose is to magnify the centre of an image relative to the size of the cameras lens size. Features and benefits of teleconverter camera lensĪ teleconverter lens is also sometimes known as a tele extender lens and is designed to be fitted between the camera body and the camera lens itself. Their product range includes action cams, dash cams and camera accessories as well as a range of Vivitar teleconverter camera lenses. US$ (or so) it should easily be able to beat other budget macro solution such as macro diopters, extension tubes or the popular "pseudo" macro zooms.Vivitar are one of the worlds leading manufacturer of photographic and optical equipment.
It is probably no real competition for a more "serious" macro lens but if you're on a very tight budget it is still worth a thought. Vignetting and CAs are very well controlled and distortions are absent. The build quality is dismal but optically it is pretty capable lens when stopped down a little. The Cosina performed according to its reputation - "cream in a yogurt cup". Lateral chromatic aberrations (color shadows at harsh contrast transitions) are very low and not really field relevant at all tested settings. Please note that the results are only comparable within the Pentax lens test group!. If you want to know more about the MTF50 figures you may check out the corresponding Imatest Explanations. The chart is limited to the visually relevant LW/PH range of. The chart shows in line widths per picture height (LW/PH) which can be taken as a measure for sharpness. Dedicated macro tests are NOT possible at this stage!īelow is a simplified summary of the formal findings. Please note that this test has been performed at a conventional working distance (Ħm). The exposure data suggests an effective apertureĢ/3 f-stops bigger than specified (from f/5.6 onwards). At f/16 diffraction effects start to have a more pronounced impact on the quality.Īs already hinted in the vignetting chapter the aperture accuracy doesn't seem to be overly high. The sweet spot of the lens is reached at f/8 with an excellent center- and very good border-resolution. At f/5.6 the borders have already improved to very good quality. At f/3.5 the resolution is a bit reduced (still good) at the borders but the center is already on a high level. The Cosina is able to produce very decent results throughout most of the range. Some guy here in Vancouver tried to sell his Nikon version but couldn't get any takers as they couldn't imagine his lens being decent for the $100 he was asking:
It gets decent marks for a very budget lens. f5.6 is to wide for many 1:1 macro shots, your better off closed down for increased depth of field, which is always a problem in true macro mode.Ĭosina made this lens even though it bears the Vivitar name, here is a Photozone review of the Cosina (Vivitar). Some one here said you could only use f5.6 as though that was a bad thing with the adapter this tells me this person doesn't shoot much macro.
I use it as a portrait lens on my full frame and I've used the macro function, with and without adapter. The reason I bought it was that Pop Photo recommended it when it first came out.
If you snoop around you should find some decent reviews of this lens.
